A Bit More Cricket

8th July 2025

Oooh - I haven't written anything here for a while. Like usual I've not had much to say. But still. Here we are. A couple of posts ago I gave a bit of an update on how my cricket season was going. I'm never going to be a default pick for a team, and the rest of my life will mean I don't play every week, but so far this season I've played more than previously and it's been pretty good.

Things at Oughtibridge CC haven't really continued much, not for an awful reason or anything, it's just the times I have been available there have been other people available too and I've not been needed. Also, the team won a few games and got the "play to win" bug. It has made me realise more that I'm just not that competitive. Of course I want to win matches when I play, it is more fun than losing, but I am far more suited to friendly cricket than league cricket. It's so much more enjoyable, relaxed. I will play for Oughtibridge if I'm available and they are short of players but I don't mind if that doesn't happen again this season.

Having said that - I have played a few more games of cricket since my last update. A couple of games for Sheffield University Staff CC - I'm not staff, just a hanger-on. I've been involved there a couple of seasons but I've not played much. They are a great team and growing too. They have a couple of league teams on Saturday, a ladies' team in a Sunday league, and organise a whole bunch of friendly games throughout the season.

So, as it stands, I have played 5 games, scored a total of 52 runs (56 really - but we'll go by offical play-cricket.com stats, where four of my runs were given to the wrong player) and I've only been out once. This makes my average a slightly unrealistic 52! Having scored 4*, 2*, 4*, 0(4)* and then 42 this Sunday. Seeing as my target for the season was play five games, with an average of 20 I am happy with the season so far!
